fide test: Your path to language certification in German
Would you like to prove your language skills in German?
SLA Basel is an accredited examination institution for the fide test.
With this German test, you can have your German language skills officially assessed. The language passport you receive after passing the fide test is recognised throughout Switzerland. It was developed on behalf of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).
The fide test at a glance
Die Test-Aufgaben sind auf den Niveaus A1–B1 gemäss Gemeinsamer europäischer Referenzrahmen (GER)They refer to various everyday situations in Switzerland, such as at work, at the doctor's office or at the local council.
The fide language passport is suitable as official proof of language proficiency for various residence and naturalisation procedures. Anyone applying for family reunification, the granting or extension of a residence permit, or a regular or early settlement permit has recognised proof with the fide certificate for German.
The fide test consists of an oral part (“Speaking and understanding”) and a written part (“Reading & Writing”). Der mündliche Teil von fide Basel dauert 40 Minuten, der schriftliche Teil 60 Minuten.

Registration
Who can take the fide test?
Anyone aged 16 or over can take the fide test. The test is aimed at anyone who wants to prove their German language skills for everyday life in Switzerland. For example, anyone wishing to apply for a residence permit, a settlement permit or naturalisation can use this test as official proof of their German language skills. People with limited reading and writing skills can also take the oral part of the exam.
How can I register for the fide test?
You can register for the fide test directly using the online registration form or on site at SLA Basel. Registration for the exam is possible at any time. However, the number of places is limited. When registering, you can choose whether you want to take the entire fide test, only the written part or only the oral part.
How much does the fide test cost?
Der ganze fide-Test kostet CHF 250.-. Möchten Sie nur am mündlichen Teil teilnehmen, kostet dies CHF 170.–, während der schriftliche Teil CHF 120.– beträgt.
How long does the fide test take?
The written part of the fide test lasts 60 minutes, while the oral part lasts 40 minutes.
When will I receive the results/language passport?
You will receive your language passport and test results by post approximately four weeks after the test. We cannot provide any information about the results over the phone.
How can I prepare for the fide test?
Sie können sich mit einer gezielten Vorbereitung sicher für den fide-Test fühlen. Es gibt verschiedene Methoden, sich auf diesen Test vorzubereiten. Um das gewünschte Sprachniveau beim Test zu zeigen, ist es wichtig, dass Sie im Alltag so oft wie möglich Deutsch üben. Sei es beim Einkaufen, in Gesprächen mit Freunden oder bei Behördengängen, der Mut zum Sprechen ist entscheidend.
But also listen to German radio stations or podcasts and watch films with subtitles. This will help you improve your listening comprehension. Writing short texts or emails on a regular basis is another way to practise your language skills.
In addition, you can work through sample exercises to familiarise yourself with the test format. If you would like targeted support, you can attend a fide test preparation course.
