How to hold real conversations with an A2 level
You can do more than you think!
Many think: „I can only really speak Spanish once I've reached B1 or B2.“ But that's not actually the case. Even with an A2 level, you already have the most important basics at your disposal to hold real conversations. Not perfectly, but effectively. With this post, we'll show you how you can start conversing right now using simple means.
What does „echte Gespräche“ mean at A2 level?
Real conversations don't even need to be profound or grammatically complex. It is already enough if you can chat about everyday topics, such as the weather, your hobbies or your daily routine. Once you have reached this language level, you understand simple statements, can ask questions and also respond to them. That is, after all, the core of real communication at A2.
The most important building blocks for conversations
To speak more fluently, you mainly need so-called conversational phrases. These are fixed expressions that you frequently need, e.g.:
- How's it going? – How's it going?
- Of course!
- I don't understand.
- Could you please repeat that?
Even simple connectors help you to connect thoughts:
and (und), but (aber), because (weil), also (auch), then (also)
Practise these little words, they make all the difference!
Topics you can chat about casually
At A2 level you can talk about many personal and everyday things:
- Family and friends: „I have two brothers.“
- Leisure and hobbies: „I like reading and watching series.“
- Daily routine: „In the morning I have breakfast and go to work.“
- Travel and food: „I love Spanish food.“
- Plans: „This weekend I want to go to the cinema.“
Just pick topics that interest you. That way, you'll naturally speak with more motivation.
How to react spontaneously, even if you are lost for words
Don't know a word? No problem. Describe it:
- „It is like a soup, but cold“ (if you fancy a gazpacho)
- Or use gestures, pauses and simple words.
Also: buy some time! Just say:
- „Just a moment, please…“
- „I don't know how to say it, but...“
That shows you want to communicate and that counts.
Train listening comprehension effectively
Understanding is just as important as speaking. Listen regularly to Spanish voices, even if you don't understand everything at first. That is completely normal.
- Recommendation: Listen to slowly spoken podcasts or series with subtitles at the beginning.
- Tip: Repeat short scenes several times. Write down what you understand.
This is how you will become more confident step by step. Practice makes perfect, after all.
Tips for everyday conversation practice
Theory is good, but practice is better. Therefore, just make use of every opportunity. These include the following:
- Find a tandem partner (e.g. via language apps or forums)
- Practising dialogues with friends, classmates or online
- Roleplay on everyday situations (shopping, restaurants, phone calls)
Every exercise moves you forward. Even 10 minutes a day helps enormously.

Many remain silent for fear of making mistakes. Yet that is precisely part of learning. Native speakers are pleased when you speak their language, even if it isn't perfect. Therefore, there is no point in hiding. Better to tell yourself:
„I'm learning. Mistakes are part of the process.“
The more often you dare, the quicker you will get better. That is the be-all and end-all of learning languages.

So with A2 you can already achieve a lot. You don't have to be perfect, just willing to communicate. The more you speak, the more natural your language becomes. So make use of the level you've attained and grow from it.
