10 tips to pass the telc exam successfully

The telc exam is the crucial step for many learners. Whether for a job, a degree course or a residence permit, anyone who wants to officially prove their language skills can easily master this exam with the right preparation. In this post, we will show you ten practical tips on how to prepare optimally and get through the exam with confidence.

Understand the exam structure

The telc exam consists of four parts: Reading, listening, writing and speaking. Each section of the test assesses different skills. If you know exactly what to expect, you can practice more effectively and manage your time better. It is best to download sample tests from the official telc website and familiarise yourself with the task formats and marking criteria.

Select the correct level

Ob B1, B2 or C1, choose your language level realistically. If you overreach, you will lose motivation. A language teacher can help you assess your current language level and determine the appropriate goal. Anyone who chooses the right level saves time and hassle. An online placement test can also help you quickly assess your language level.

Practise with past papers

The best exercises are real telc tests. They show you how the tasks are formulated and what time limits apply. Simulate the exam at home with a stopwatch and without interruption. This is how you get used to the situation and reduce exam anxiety.

Focus on your weaknesses

Note down which tasks you find difficult. Is it grammar, listening comprehension or speaking freely? Find out and plan targeted practice sessions for precisely these areas of learning. There is little point in just revising what you are already good at. Progress is made much more when you actively tackle your weak points.

Write clearly and in a structured manner

In the written part, not only grammar counts, but also structure. Plan your text in three sections, namely introduction, main body and conclusion. Use linking words like firstly, furthermore, finally. That is how you sound linguistically confident and impress with a clean structure.

Speak with confidence

The oral part of the telc exam frightens many learners. However, examiners do not look for perfection in this part, but rather for comprehensibility and fluent communication. Therefore, learn fixed phrases like “In my opinion...”  or “May I add….Speak loudly, clearly and maintain eye contact. That shows confidence.

Learn with partners or in groups

Speaking relies on interaction. Therefore, practice regularly with study partners, in tandems, or in a language course. In a group, you will learn vocabulary on the one hand and spontaneous reacting, listening, and formulating on the other. These are all skills that are crucial in the exam.

Use media in everyday life

For a successful exam, listen to podcasts, watch the news or series in German. This helps you get used to a natural speaking pace and authentic language. Just 15 minutes a day makes a noticeable difference. As a result, your brain learns to recognise structures unconsciously. Quite effortlessly.

Plan your time

Create a realistic study plan: rather 30 minutes a day than five hours once a week. Repetition is, of course, the key to long-term success. Also schedule breaks. Your brain needs time, after all. That way you can consolidate what you have learnt.

Stay calm on exam day

A good breakfast, turning up on time and calm breathing help more than any last-minute panic studying. Get your materials ready the evening before and go to sleep early. Remember this: you have practiced, you are ready. Confidence is your best companion.
