Where does the telc examination take place?

• Location: SLA Basel (official examination centre), Münchensteinerstrasse 2, 4052 Basel
• Arrival: From Basel SBB, take the tram in a few minutes to the „Basel, Münchensteinerstrasse“ stop (e.g. lines 10/11) or about 10–15 minutes on foot.
• Parking: Blue zone limited only. Alternative: Bahnhof Süd multi-storey car park, Güterstrasse 115 (access via Meret-Oppenheim-Strasse).

This is the structure of the telc B1 exam

At telc German B1 exam has a written and a oral Part. In terms of content, the aim is to cope linguistically with typical situations from everyday life and work: understanding information, reacting accordingly and expressing oneself clearly.

Written section: Reading, language building blocks, listening, writing

• Read: You work with everyday texts (e.g. short articles, notices, announcements, advertisements). Typical tasks include matching headings, finding relevant information and answering statements/questions correctly.
• Language building blocks Gap-fill exercises where you select appropriate words/structures (vocabulary and grammar in context).
• Listen: You listen to short texts and conversations from standard situations and decide, for example, whether statements are correct, or extract specific important information.
• Write: You are drafting a message (letter/e-mail) and addressing given points, fitting the situation.

Oral part: Speaking

You are having a conversation (often as a paired test). The content includes: a brief introduction and exchange of personal information, talking about a given topic and planning/deciding something together (making suggestions, giving reasons, reacting, etc.). 

Important:

You do not have to speak without errors in the oral telc B1 German examination. What is decisive is that you successfully manage the tasks at B1 level from a communicative perspective and can express yourself clearly overall, even if you hesitate from time to time or have an accent.

Registration for the telc B1 German examination

Here’s how to register:

• Select appointment
• Submit registration: online (form), in person or by email
• Received confirmation of attendance
• Pay exam fee

Required documents

• Valid identification (ID card, driving licence or passport)

You cannot take part without valid identification.

Places & recommendation for early registration

Many participants book their place early. If you are tied to a specific month, we recommend registering in good time.

Closing date for registration

The closing date for registration is 16 days before the exam date. To ensure everything goes smoothly, you shouldn't put off registration until the last day.

Exam fee and payment

• telc B1 exam fee: CHF 280.Only telc B1 written: CHF 200.–, only telc B1 oral: CHF 180.–
• After your registration, you will receive an invoice.
• The fee must be paid by the due date.
• Prompt payment is a prerequisite for participation; the date on the invoice is binding.

Cancellation / Transfer / Refund

Registration is binding and generally non-cancellable.
If you have to deregister, your written deregistration must be submitted at the latest 16 days before the exam date at the Swiss Language Academy be received. The determining factor is the date your message is received by the Swiss Language Academy.

Important:

Non-payment, failure to receive an invoice or non-attendance on the day of the exam do not constitute cancellation of registration.

 

Cancellation after deadline / Non-attendance (telc B1)

If you withdraw after the withdrawal deadline or fail to attend on the day of the examination, 100 % of the examination fee will be payable. A refund is only possible in the event of serious illness and requires a doctor’s certificate. In this case, an additional processing fee of CHF 80.– will be charged.
Anyone who does not attend without a valid cancellation will not receive a refund.

Rescheduling and registration after the cancellation deadline

A rebooking is only possible until the cancellation deadline. The binding deadlines for the telc B1 German exam can be found on our website. At Swiss Language Academy can postpone an exam date if too few participants have registered. Registrations received after the cancellation deadline cannot be cancelled.

No aids allowed in the telc B1 exam

Throughout telc B1 German exam (both written and oral) no aids are permitted. These include, among other things, ballpoint pens, dictionaries and electronic devices such as smartphones, smartwatches or similar.

The only things permitted are:

• Writing materials (e.g. a soft pencil)
• pencil sharpener
• rubber
• a drink

All other items will be kept securely for the duration of the exam.

Result & Certificate

Your exam will be marked after the appointment. Depending on the exam date and workload, you will usually receive your result within 4 to 6 weeks.

• Listen: Listen to short segments or dialogues and note down the core message + most important info (who/what/why/outcome). Pay special attention to justifications (because, therefore, although). Listen to the same text twice: overview, then details.
• Write: Write short emails/letters with a clear structure: reason – purpose – request/suggestion – conclusion. Use connecting phrases such as therefore, furthermore, nonetheless and briefly give reasons.
• Speak: Speak coherently: state the topic, 2–3 points, conclusion. Practise opinion + justification, pros and cons, suggestions and joint decisions („In my opinion..., because...“, „One advantage is..., but...“, „I suggest...“).
