Language proficiency levels: How to determine them
Language levels are used to describe a person's ability in a foreign language. This is important to determine which type of courses or materials are best suited for a person and to track progress in the language. There are various systems for classifying language levels, but the most widely used is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
The ERS is divided into six levels, from A1 to C2, ranging from beginners to advanced language users. Each level is divided into two sublevels, for example A1.1 and A1.2.
The six levels of the ERS
A1 is the beginner level. At this level, you can form and understand simple sentences to describe your own needs and those of daily life. You can also ask and answer simple questions and understand simple instructions and directions.- A2 is the level for beginners with advanced knowledge. At this level, one can communicate in simple, routine situations and give short, simple messages. One can also understand simple texts related to topics that are familiar to one.
- B1 is the level for independent users. At this level, you can communicate in most everyday situations and understand short, concise texts related to familiar topics. You can also write simple texts and express an opinion.
- B2 is the level for independent users. At this level, you can express yourself orally and in writing in various situations and understand texts that relate to more complex topics. You can also express an opinion on various topics and argue a point.
- C1 is the level for proficient users. At this level, one can express oneself orally and in writing and understand texts that relate to complex topics. One can also discuss different opinions on various topics and argue a point.
- C2 is the level for proficient users. At this level, one can express oneself orally and in writing and understand texts that relate to very complex topics. One can also discuss and argue different opinions on various subjects.
How to determine your own language level
There are various ways to assess your own language proficiency. One option is to take a standardised language test, such as the Goethe Certificate test or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL. These tests are offered by official bodies and assess listening and reading comprehension, oral and written expression, and grammar.
Another option is to ask a teacher or a native speaker to assess your level. This person can give you feedback on how well you have mastered the language and what level you have reached.
It is important to bear in mind that language proficiency levels are not static and may improve or decline over time. That is why it is important to practise regularly and continue learning in order to improve and maintain your language proficiency.
