English is more than just a school subject

Have you had the experience of not being able to give directions to a tourist, even though you actually knew the way, because you lacked the necessary English skills? Experiences like this and similar ones show us that it is a shame when people haven't made the most of their school years. Later in life, we realise that English is more than just a school subject.

In today's globalised world there are many reasons to learn a foreign language, and many benefits specifically to learning English. There are currently around 1.5 billion English speakers worldwide, which corresponds to one fifth of the global population.

This language is spoken in some of the most economically and culturally influential countries in the world and, over time, has become the common language of the entire world. Not only for international communication, but also for international business, science, medicine, technology and law. With advancing technology, it is entering our lives more and more.

As the primary communication language across the globe, proficiency in this language is a highly sought-after skill in the international workplace. Applicants with fluent English skills on their CV have statistically proven increased employability.

On the other hand, we know that alongside countries with English as their main language, there are dozens of different countries that have English as an official language. These include, for example, India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kenya, etc.

Another reason to learn English is the access to some of the best education systems and institutes in the world. Many of the world's top universities are located either in the UK and the USA or use this language as the main language for their courses, and proficiency in English is therefore the key when it comes to applying.

Having a good command of English makes many wishes come true

Speaking and understanding English also improves your chances of finding employment and helps you to converse and communicate successfully with your fellow human beings – be it in the supermarket, at the doctors or with new friends and neighbours. And not just in English-speaking countries, but all over the world.

Knowledge of English opens up a vast world of culture, art and entertainment to you.
Many of the world's most iconic films and television shows have been produced in English, a large proportion of them in Hollywood, and a fluent grasp of English gives you the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate them in their original form – either with or without subtitles.

The same applies to literature. There are so many world-famous works that were originally produced in English. Watching and reading English-language media also improves your language skills, especially your listening and reading comprehension.

With a good command of English, you are also a global citizen. Many works from all over the world have been translated into English, allowing you to reach all people and cultures across the globe and become a global citizen.

There are many more reasons to have a good knowledge of English, and for German speakers it is relatively easy to learn this language. Learning English is therefore definitely worthwhile. It is therefore advisable to learn this language without further delay.
