What are the advantages of speaking English fluently?

In an international city like Basel, most people use English at work on a regular basis, speaking with foreign customers or dealing with companies from other countries. Those who don’t use it now will probably need it at some point in the near future, so if you aren’t completely comfortable using English in a professional situation, the best thing would be to start studying as
soon as possible!

If your goal is to use English mainly in the office, remember that SLA-Basel also offers Business English courses, private courses and intensive courses.
But are the benefits of speaking English limited to work situations?

Definitely not. By now,

English is undoubtedly the universal language, and it looks like it will stay this way for a very long time. If you want to have an idea of the importance of Shakespeare’s language in the world today, here are some facts: there are roughly twice as many people who speak English as a second language today than there are native speakers of English. Combined, these numbers amount to well over one billion people. This means that, in most places around the globe, you’re never too far from someone who can speak at least a little English.

So this is definitely the language you need if you want to travel to many different countries (and who doesn’t?).So we have talked about work and travel. What else? Culture and information. If you’ve ever been near a computer you know that a massive part of the internet is in English. Whether you’re looking for tips on a new hobby, the price of a resort on a sunny island or the recipe for a delicious-looking dish you saw in a film, you’re highly likely to come across a website in English.

And speaking of films, have you noticed how many of your favourite movies or TV series are in English?

Wouldn’t you like to be able to watch all of them without subtitles?

Today, and probably for many years to come, English is the language of travel, international trade, culture and, of course, technology and the internet. Being able to use it and understand it well
is a prerequisite to move freely in any of these areas. The sooner you start studying English, the sooner you will reach the level which you need in order to achieve all of your goals.
